Safety at SMĀϰķ

At SMĀϰķ, nothing matters more than the safety and wellbeing of our children.

From the playrooms to the gardens, every one of our nurseries is designed to be a secure, nurturing space where children feel comfortable and parents feel confident.

To achieve this, we’ve set clear policies, strong procedures, and high expectations for every
nursery in our family. Our specialist teams work closely with our settings to train team members, monitor practice, and ensure that the highest standards are upheld every single day.

How We Keep Children Safe

CCTV & image capturing

All SMĀϰķ nurseries are equipped with CCTV to help us provide a safe and welcoming environment.
Our cameras:

  • offer reassurance to our families and team
  • support learning, training, reflection, and improvement
  • are securely managed with strict privacy rules
  • are only accessed when necessary and in line with our safeguarding guidelines

We also operate a strict “no phone & camera” policy within our nursery buildings.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

Our nurseries are regulated and inspected by Ofsted. Over and above this, our in-house Education and Quality Assurance teams ensure that every nursery delivers excellent education and care every day.

  • Internal and external inspections take place twice a year.
  • Practice is checked against EYFS and Ofsted requirements
  • Findings are used to support continual improvement

Safer Recruitment

We follow rigorous safer recruitment procedures – over and above industry standards – to ensure that every person working for SMĀϰķ is safe, suitable, and appropriately qualified.

  • KCSIE (Keeping Children Safe in Education) guidance is followed in full
  • Enhanced DBS checks, references and vetting take place before any employment begins
  • Ongoing training supports continued safeguarding awareness, with yearly refresher training sessions beyond EYFS requirements

Safeguarding Culture

At SMĀϰķ, safeguarding is part of who we are. Every team member shares responsibility for keeping children safe and secure.

  • Each nursery has a Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Every team member receives regular training in safeguarding and child protection
  • We foster a culture of transparency so everyone feels confident to speak up
  • Our Whistleblowing Policy and team app enable concerns to be raised safely and directly with leadership.

Dietary Safety

Children receive healthy, balanced meals and snacks that meet individual dietary needs and cultural requirements.

  • Food is sourced from trusted suppliers
  • All nursery team members are trained in mealtime procedures
  • Allergies and dietary plans are carefully managed and recorded

Health, Safety & first aid

Every team member is trained in the SMĀϰķ Framework, our core health and safety standard. We audit each nursery twice a year to make sure the environment always meets our expectations. We also go over and above EYFS standards by ensuring that every single educator in our nurseries is First Aid trained.

Building security & maintenance

All of our buildings are secure, and we have robust systems and procedures in place to ensure that no one unknown can gain access to our nurseries. We are also supported by a skilled team of caretakers, based near our nurseries, who are on hand to respond quickly to any maintenance issues.

  • Ongoing refurbishment programmes keep spaces safe and well presented
  • Buildings and gardens are regularly checked and improved

Cyber Security

At SMĀϰķ, the safety and privacy of every child, family and team member is paramount which is why we use robust, industry-leading cybersecurity solutions to protect all digital information.

  • Our systems are designed with multiple layers of security, including encrypted data storage, secure access controls, and continuous monitoring to guard against unauthorised access.
  • We work only with trusted partners who meet strict compliance standards, and our team receive ongoing training to ensure responsible and secure handling of all data.
  • We keep our families’ personal information safe, allowing us to focus on what matters most; providing a nurturing, supportive environment for their children.
